The Coast Road

Images from a road trip in 2008.




The Coast Road unceremoniously takes off from Highway 1, the Cabrillo Highway, just north of Big Sur.




The yellow sign says "impassible in wet weather" (I can't believe I didn't get a closeup.)




A dusty road inland to the uplands.




Looking back (south) towards the valley where campgrounds and resorts abound.




A good view of the Coast Range. "The fog comes on little cat feet..."

The far ridge has been blackened by a recent fire.




The road courses through a copse of Monterey Cypress. Are they introduced, or native?  I don't know.

Years ago I sketched a scene from where the road passes through an oak woodland.  




The riparian environment at Bixby Creek.










After ten miles, the road emerges to a view of the Pacific Ocean and Bixby Creek Bridge.
