On a recent trip to Oahu, Joe visited the gravesite of Martha Root, a Bahá'i who traveled the world teaching the Cause of Bahá'u'lláh. Significantly, she introduced Queen Marie of Rumania to the Faith.

Queen Marie of Romania

*

Queen Marie of Rumania

29 October 1875 – 18 July 1938

Queen Marie was the first monarch to have declared her belief in Bahá'u'lláh.

"It is like a wide embrace gathering all those who have long searched for words of hope… Saddened by the continual strife amongst believers of many confessions and wearied of their intolerance towards each other, I discovered in the Bahá'í teaching the real spirit of Christ so often denied and misunderstood."
--Queen Marie

Girl From the North Country -Bob Dylan

Girl of the North Country --Bob Dylan

If you're traveling in the north country fair
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline
Remember me to one who lives there
For she once was a true love of mine.

If you go when the snowflakes storm
When the rivers freeze and summer ends
Please see if she's wearin' a coat so warm
To keep her from the howlin' winds.

Please see for me if her hair's hanging long
If it rolls and flows all down her breast
Please see for me if her hair's hanging long
For that's the way I remember her best.

I'm a-wonderin' if she remembers me at all
Many times I've often prayed
In the darkness of my night
In the brightness of my day.

So if you're travelin' in the north country fair
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline
Remember me to one who lives there
For she once was a true love of mine.

Forty years ago today I was drafted into the U.S. Army. I remember coming home from my first day at my new job (bellhop at the San Carlos Hotel) to my little apartment on a hill overlooking the Monterey Bay, and finding a letter in the mailbox which read: "Greetings from the President of the United States." President Nixon then went on to tell me that I was soon to be a soldier, and specified the time and place where I was to report.

Before I knew it, I was in basic training at Fort Sam Houston, Texas (lower left.)

While so many others were fighting and dying in the war raging in Vietnam, I had the good fortune of serving almost two years at the Presidio of San Francisco as ordered.
