Resurrection Symbology

Sleeping soldiers by Christ tomb --Milesevo monastery

"(We) say that the meaning of Christ's resurrection is as follows: the disciples were troubled and agitated after the martyrdom of Christ. The Reality of Christ, which signifies His teachings, his bounties, his perfections, and his spiritual power, was hidden and concealed for two or three days after his martyrdom, and was not resplendent and manifest. No, rather it was lost; for the believers were few in number and were troubled and agitated. The Cause of Christ was like a lifeless body; and, when after three days the disciples became assured and steadfast, and began to serve the Cause of Christ of Christ, and resolved to spread the divine teachings, putting his counsels into practice, and arising to serve him,... his religion found life, his teachings and admonitions became evident and visible. In other words, the Cause of Christ was like a lifeless body, until the life and bounty of the Holy Spirit surrounded it." -Abdu'l-Baha"

The Nightingale of Paradise

Study of a Bird
dated A.H. 1043 / A.D. 1634
Painting by Riza-yi `Abbasi

"The world is in travail and its agitation waxeth day by day. Its face is turned towards waywardness and unbelief. Such shall be its plight that to disclose it now would not be meet and seemly. Its perversity will long continue. And when the appointed hour is come, there shall suddenly appear that which shall cause the limbs of mankind to quake. Then and only then will the Divine Standard be unfurled and the Nightingale of Paradise warble its melody." --Baha'u'llah

The Baha'i Faith and the Soviets

In "Religion in the Soviet Union" (1962), Walter Kolarz notes:

"Islam…is attacked by the communists because it is 'reactionary', encourages nationalist narrowmindness and obstructs the education and emancipation of women. Baha'iism (sic) has incurred communist displeasure for exactly the opposite reasons. It is dangerous to Communism because of its broadmindness, its tolerance, its international outlook, the attention it pays to women's education and its insistence on equality of the sexes. All this contradicts the communist thesis about the backwardness of all religions."

A Glimpse of the Golden Age of Baha'u'llah

A Glimpse of the Golden Age of Baha'u'llah.

Queen Marie of Romania

"Should a woman who is unsurpassed in her beauty and adorned with the most exquisite and priceless jewels, travel unveiled and alone, from the east of the world to the west thereof, passing through every land and journeying in all countries, there would be such a standard of justice, trustworthiness and faith on the one hand, and lack of treachery and degradation on the other, that no one would be found who would wish to rob her of her possessions or to cast a treacherous and lustful eye upon her beauteous chastity!" ---Baha'u'llah

S.F. Garbagemen 1962

Attilio shows how the trash from the cans of several homes was collected and carried over the shoulder to the truck. Kudos to these strong and noisy men!

Just Having a Good Time

One of my favorite lines of dialogue from "The Andy Griffith Show" television series of the early 1960's comes from the episode "The Loaded Goat".

A local construction crew is blasting for an underpass near            Mayberry. A farmer brings his goat uptown to experience his            weekly shopping trip, and partly because of the blasting making the goat nervous. The goat frees itself from a bench on Main Street and wanders into a storeroom. The goat eats a half of a case of dynamite.  (IMBD)

After capturing the goat, Sheriff Taylor reunites it with farmer Cy Hudgins in the courthouse and explains the situation.  Like a big brother, Cy voices his disapproval of the goat's behavior to the Sheriff:

"Eatin' dynamite. Now aint  that t'way it always is? First time he comes uptown he figures he's got to do everything."

Emmett Kelly Sweeping Up the Spotlight

After sweeping the light under the rug and getting the laugh, I would have started to walk away, stop, and then look back.  I would have returned to the rug and uncovered the light.  Then I would have swept it into a tiny spot, picked it up and put it in my breast pocket..

Backlots

Mayberry Set

When we were kids in the late 50's living in Burbank, we jumped the fence at Warner Bros. and snooped around the Western set. Same with the Disney backlot--lots of props for the movie "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" at the time.  There was even a 15 foot long wood model of the Nautilus used in filming.

We were going to pretend a gunfight on what I've learned was named Laramie Street on the Warner Bros. lot, but there was a guard at the other end walking in the same direction as we were. I don't think he saw us, but I'm not sure--we ran like hell and climbed the fence. I wish I had kept the script I found on a table in one of the structures.  Maverick? Colt .45? Sugarfoot?

The guard would have been at the end of the street--this was pretty much our view.

Looking the other way, you can see the mountain that has the Hollywood sign on the other side. We hiked up there once after seeing a scene from the TV show 'The Highway Patrol' where the bad guy tosses a bag of (fake) money in the air under the sign.

Times have changed, and security is much more sophisticated and necessary.  I don't think you can even get near the Hollywood sign, let alone a movie set.
