I found a California Poppy on the sidewalk in front of my house today, and it made me think of when my grandfather introduced me to the California State Flower. I was eight or nine, and they grew in his San Francisco backyard,
Eschscholzia californica cover inland hills and benches along the coast.
I scattered seeds one year in my own backyard, and I had a nice show in the Spring.
I found the manner that they reseed themselves fascinating. A seed pod forms, it dries in the sun and then the pod splits, flinging a few dozen seeds around.
